Who established Rhode Island?
Rhode Island, one of the thirteen original colonies of the United States, was established by Roger Williams in 1636. Seeking religious freedom, Williams founded the settlement of Providence, which later became the capital. His advocacy for separation of church and state and the rights of Native Americans shaped Rhode Island’s unique political and religious landscape. Today, the state stands as a testament to Williams’ progressive ideals and commitment to individual liberties.
