What is the real name of Rhode Island?
Rhode Island, despite its name, is not an island at all. Officially known as the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations, it is the smallest state in the United States. The name “Rhode Island” was derived from the Greek island of Rhodes, and was originally used to refer to Aquidneck Island. The term “plantations” refers to the early settlements in Providence, Portsmouth, and Newport. Though often debated, the state’s official name remains unchanged since its adoption in 1790.
